Viña del Mar, October 5 (PL-RHC)-- Sustainable fishing is one of the main issues being discussed at the 2nd International Conference "Our Ocean," underway in Viña del Mar and Valparaíso, Chile, today and tomorrow, October 5th and 6th.
Top-level experts from more than 90 countries and representatives of world organizations are trying to define the relationship of the ocean with its resources in favor of sustainable development.
The documents discussed at the meeting include, among other issues, the universal consumption of fisheries resources.
The 2014 FAO report on the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture shows that the consumption of fishery resources per capita increases from an average of 9.9 kilos in the 1960s to 19.2 kilos in 2012. It is estimated that illegal fishing is the third most lucrative criminal activity in the world, after drugs and arms trafficking.
The conference is eliciting commitments around sustainable fishing and the safeguarding of the marine ecological balance.
According to the Chilean Foreign Ministry, the conference's aim is to promote the conservation, protection and sustainable use of oceans, their resources and ecosystems.
