Former Peruvian dictator Alberto Fujimori

Lima, June 10 (RHC)-- Peru’s president-elect Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, who barely won the election over conservative rival Keiko Fujimori, has said that he will not grant amnesty to jailed former dictator Alberto Fujimori, but would sign off on an order for house arrest at Congress’ request.

The question of possible amnesty for Fujimori, whose presidency morphed into a dictatorship in the early 1990’s, has loomed during the election as his daughter Keiko, who failed to fully distance herself from her father’s human rights abuses, long maintained a lead in the polls.

But while Kuczynski, also known as PPK, managed to beat Fujimori by just 40,000 votes, her Popular Force party is set to control the Congress after winning a majority in the first round of elections in April.

When asked if he would grant amnesty for the jailed former dictator in an interview with the local publication Semana Economica, PPK responded with a clear “No.”
