United Nations, February 14 (RHC)-- Cuba has called on the UN Security Council for a multilateral, coordinated response to terrorism.

Addressing an open debate of the 15-member UN body on the danger of terrorist attacks against critical infrastructure on Monday, Cuba’s permanent representative at the UN, Anayansi Rodríguez said Havana supports the holding of a global conference toward the adoption of a multilateral response, away from today's prevailing unilateral actions and double standards.

The Cuban diplomat said at the forum: “We reject and condemn double standards and selective treatment regarding this issue. The fight against terrorism cannot be used as a pretext for military interventions, foreign interference in the internal affairs of other states, aggression, or international and human rights violations.”

The Cuban diplomat also demanded an end to the financing, arming, and training of extremist groups anywhere in the world, arguing that they spread violence and destruction across the world.

Rodríguez went on to reaffirm Cuba’s commitment to fighting all forms and manifestations of terrorism, recalling that the Cuban people have also been the victims of terrorist acts organized, funded and executed from abroad, which have claimed close to 3,500 lives and left more than 2,000 others injured.

The Cuban diplomat reiterated also that the Caribbean state has never, nor will it ever allow its territory to be used to plot, carry out or support terrorist attacks against any country.

Regarding emerging terrorist threats that involve the use of new information and communication technologies, the Cuban representative again called on all countries to unite to confront the problem.

She said: “It is vital to create a legally binding international instrument, within the United Nations system, able to regulate and ensure that information and communication technologies are used in accordance with International Law, and especially the UN Charter.”
