Guantánamo, May 4 (RHC)-- The 5th International Seminar for Peace and the Elimination of Foreign Military Bases began sessions Thursday in eastern Guantánamo province with a condemnation of attempts by some powerful countries to interfere in the internal affairs of other states, in flagrant violation of international law.

More than 200 researchers, scholars and peace-loving people from 25 countries are participating in the event, which seeks to coordinate actions and efforts toward further consolidating Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace, proclaimed by heads of state and government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in January 2014 in Havana.

Participants in the conference will also debate actions to promote international peace and stability and reject wars and imperialist hegemony.
In statements to Cuban press, World Peace Council President María Do Socorro said the Guantánamo seminar also aims to raise public awareness about the pressing need for nuclear disarmament and the elimination of foreign military presence, particularly U.S. military bases and naval fleets all over the world.
