New York, April 18 (RHC)-- On Monday, at the Coordination and Management Segment of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), Cuba was elected a member of the United Nations Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations for the period 2019-2022, having the highest number of votes (44) of the Latin America and the Caribbean region.

Cuba has performed and will continue to perform its functions as a member of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations in full compliance with the rules and procedures that govern the work of said Committee. During its membership, Cuba will encourage the Committee to consider requests for recognition as consultative entities to guarantee, whenever possible, the participation of non-governmental organizations from all regions and particularly from developing countries and thus help achieve fair, balanced, effective and genuine participation of non-governmental organizations from all regions and areas of the world.

During its mandate Cuba will continue the review of all requests for consultative status to determine compliance with the requirements established in Resolution 1996/31 of ECOSOC, in particular, that the objectives and purposes of the entities are consistent with the spirit, purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
