Geneva, May 18 (RHC)-- The division general and Chief of the National General Staff of Civil Defense, Ramón Pardo Guerra, held a fruitful meeting with the Secretary General of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Elhadj As Sy.
During the encounter, the conversation delved into existing cooperation between the island and the international organization and prospects for expansion in disaster risk reduction in Cuba.
As Sy visited the island in February 2018. During his stay he had the opportunity to learn about the country's experience in confronting meteorological events and protecting the life of the population.
The Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction, a biennial forum established by the General Assembly of the United Nations, has been meeting this week at the headquarters of the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva, and the Cuban delegation to the event was headed by General Pardo Guerra.
In related news, the annual drill Meteoro is being held on the island this weekend. One of the main goals of the two day-event is to strengthen capacities to better respond to hurricanes, epidemics, intense droughts and earthquakes.
Work will also be carried out on the training of the personnel who take care of the victims, verification of the communications, among other necessary tasks to be performed in case of such disasters.
