Havana, October 10 (RHC)-- The deputies to the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP) of Cuba are meeting in an extraordinary session this Thursday to elect the President and Vice President of the Republic and other high officials of the State.

They shall also elect the President, Vice President, and Secretary of the aforementioned legislative body, who in turn shall be members of the Council of State, and the remaining 18 members thereof.

In this way, legislators will comply with the provisions of the new Constitution and the Electoral Law.

The lawmakers will choose the country´s highest government authorities among the deputies, based on their merits and abilities. It is the first time since the institutionalization of the country in  1976 that the Caribbean nation will have a President of the Republic, whose age must range between 35 and 60 years.

Following the Electoral Law, during the extraordinary session the National Electoral Council and the National Candidatures Commission will conduct the presentation and approval of the draft candidacies arising from the proposals made a few days ago by the parliamentarians themselves, as well as the announced elections through the direct and secret vote of the lawmakers..

Such changes in the management structures of a country that has become a nation with a Socialist Rule of Law correspond to the provisions of the newly approved Constitution, which had the backing of an overwhelming majority of Cubans who contributed to its drafting.

The election taking place today consolidates Cuban institutionalization since it will guarantee the continuity of the Revolution, begun 151 years ago, on October 10, 1868, and of the ideas of its historic leader, Fidel Castro (1926-2016).

The fourth extraordinary session of the 9th Legislature of the National Parliament will begin at 10:00 am this Thursday, in Havana´s Convention Center, and will be aired by Cubavisión, Cubavisión Internacional, the Caribbean Channel, Radio Rebelde and Radio Habana Cuba.
