Havana, December 25 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez followed up on the actions being carried out in the country to increase food production.

During a meeting held in the Cuban capital, participants discussed the planting of chickpeas in the province of Sancti Spíritus, where a collaboration project with Turkey is underway. It is introducing new varieties of this grain in Cuba, evaluating their behavior in the country's climatic conditions.

Díaz-Canel insisted on the importance of promoting this crop and checking if it would make possible good yields in periods of drought.

He considered that an increase in this production would pave the way for a greater variety of grains at different times of the year.

On fruit production, participants stated that more than 18 thousand hectares are being devoted to this purpose, with the participation of 353 cooperatives.

This year, the state fruit tree program produced 96 thousand 500 tons, a figure that represents 88% of the planned output and 11% of the total fruit tree production in the country.

In these areas, progress was also made with the installation of mini-industries. Currently, there are more than 200 in operation dedicated to the processing of fruits and vegetables.

The President also evaluated different strategies to recover the fishing fleets, both in the high seas and in the insular platform, actions that will allow increasing the levels of capture.

In this regard, the Russian Federation has collaborated with the design of projects that are the result of the most recent working visit made to that nation by the Cuban Head of State.
