Havana, January 11 (RHC) -- The 15 Provincial Assemblies of People's Power in Cuba are holding their last sessions this Saturday as a preliminary step towards the establishment of new structures in the provinces, under the authority of governors.

Sources from the National Parliament said that during the solemn meetings, participants will take stock of the progress made in the improvement of the People's Power and will acknowledge Assembly's delegates, elected in 2018, They will be all ceasing their functions as of this Saturday.

Next January18, municipal assemblies of the island's 168 municipalities will gather to elect governors and deputy governors.

Each member of the municipal governments will vote for the one corresponding to their province, in a process organized by the National Electoral Council (CNE).

The change is due to the provisions of the new Constitution of the Republic of Cuba, which reinstated the figure of the governor, a position eliminated after the triumph of the Revolution in 1959.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel will propose the candidates for governors.

In their exercise of power, the Governors and vice-Governors will be accompanied by a provincial council, which will include the presidents and vice-presidents of the corresponding municipal assemblies of popular power and the municipal mayors (not yet elected).
