Colombo, May 11 (RHC)-- Sri Lanka has expressed appreciation for Cuba's attention to migrant workers in Haiti.  According to the Sri Lankan newspaper The Daily News, at the request of the Government of Sri Lanka, Cuba sent a medical team to attend to the health needs of Sri Lankan migrant workers in Haiti.

This is another example of Cuba's commitment to humanity at a time of need and true friendship between the two countries, said the Sri Lankan Daily News.  The Sri Lankan government conveyed its deep appreciation to the governments of Cuba and Haiti for their support and cooperation, the newspaper said.

Cuba's five-member medical team arrived on May 7th at the facilities located in the Caracol industrial park in northeastern Haiti, where most of the Sri Lankan workers live, the newspaper reported.  The Cuban doctors will advise Sri Lankan migrant workers on best practices for preventing the spread of Covid-19, regular screening of medical conditions and primary care for those in need.

The second largest Sri Lankan migrant workforce in the Caribbean region is based in Haiti, where there are several factories owned by Sri Lankan companies.  Those factories had not been operating at full capacity owing to the prevailing health conditions in the world, and those workers would now be able to continue working at full capacity with confidence.

All Sri Lankans in the Caribbean region are safe and so far have not been affected by COVID-19, the source said.
