Havana, February 12 (RHC)-- The Oxfam International confederation is carrying out 12 cooperation projects in Cuba to support sustainable and equitable development, food security, and gender justice.

In statements to the press, the director of Oxfam in Cuba, Italian Elena Gentili, said that these programs amount to six million 500 thousand euros.

Among some of them is the one underway in the eastern provinces of Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo, supporting the achievement of sustainable agriculture.

Another is related to inter-collaboration among agricultural cooperatives, with the Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) and other organizations.

With  27 years of activity in Cuba and presence in almost all the national territory, Oxfam is implementing a project with the support of two million euros, financed by the European Union, to mitigate the damages caused by Hurricane Irma in four provinces.

The entity also collaborates in fundraising to support the control of the Covid-19 pandemic, and to this end, it recently started an initiative to apply it in two Havana municipalities.

This includes providing means of protection to family caregivers, local women's organizations, comprehensive training, and delivery of laboratory reagents.

It also includes a gender-focused awareness-raising campaign to support prevention measures and warnings about the risks involved in this disease.

Oxfam cooperates with some 50 central government agencies, organizations, research institutes, universities, and other centers in the country for its activities in Cuba.

Gentili praised the Cuban health system, its achievements in the fight against Covid-19, and Cuban doctors' solidarity in the fight against the pandemic in other countries.

All this, she acknowledged, despite the tightening of the blockade and coercive measures during the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump, the global crisis and the drop in foreign exchange earnings due to the fall in international tourism.
