Havana, July 14 (RHC) –- The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Margaret Chan, is meeting a working agenda in Cuba that includes visits to scientific research centers among other activities.

Chan, who is being accompanied by the director of the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa Etienne, was welcomed at Havana’s Jose Marti International Airport by Cuban Health minister Roberto Morales and by the representative of the two organizations on the island, Jose Luis Di Fabio.

Speaking to reporters, Margaret Chan said that she was happy to be here for the third time and that she always learns something new about Cuban scientists and workers.

During her stay in Havana, the WHO top executive will visit the centers for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Immuno-Assay and Molecular Immunology research, and will give a key-note lecture at the Health Ministry.

In May this year, Cuba chaired the 67th World Health Assembly, which was considered an acknowledgement to the achievements of the island’s health system.
