Poet and essayist Fina García-Marruz  passes away

Fina Garcia-Marruz

Havana, June 27 (RHC) -- Cuban poet, essayist, researcher, and literary critic Fina Garcia-Marruz died on Monday in Havana at 99, according to local television.

On Twitter, Casa de las Americas regretted the loss of García-Marruz, "one of the most extraordinary poetic voices of Latin American literature" and "a lucid essayist to whom we dedicated our Author's Week in 2014".

The Cuban intellectual was born on April 28, 1923.

She won, among other awards, the Pablo Neruda Prize in 2007, the National Literature Award in 1990, and the Reina Sofia Prize for Ibero-American Poetry in 2011.

She belonged to the group of poets of the Orígenes Magazine, along with her husband, Cintio Vitier.

She also worked as a literary researcher at the José Martí National Library. She belonged to the Centro de Estudios Martianos as part of the team that conceived the critical edition of the Complete Works of the Apostle and National Hero.
