Havana, July 8 (RHC)-- Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel expressed his condolences Friday on the death of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who was shot while delivering an election speech.

On his Twitter account, the president condemned, on behalf of the people, the attack that caused the death of the Liberal Democratic Party leader.

"We deeply regret the loss of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and express our condemnation of the cruel attack that caused his death. Heartfelt condolences to the people and government of #Japan, which I extend to family and friends," he posted on that social network.

According to news reports, Abe collapsed and was taken to a nearby hospital while suffering cardiopulmonary arrest.

Police arrested the assailant at the scene and are investigating the details of the attack, according to Japanese news channel NHK.

Abe was born on September 21, 1954 and died at the age of 67, shot and mortally wounded in the city of Nara, in western Japan.
