Havana, July 18 (RHC)-- On the occasion of Nelson Mandela International Day, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, evoked the South African anti-colonialist and anti-imperialist fighter this Monday.

"Today, the world celebrates Mandela Day 2022. Let no one forget the struggles and sufferings of the great anti-colonialist and anti-imperialist fighter. He was a great friend of Fidel and Cuba, to whom he thanked for his contribution to the end of apartheid," Díaz-Canel wrote on Twitter.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (July 18, 1918 - December 5, 2013) was the first president of South Africa (from 1994 to 1999) democratically elected by universal suffrage.

Mandela played an essential role in the struggle against the policy of racial segregation (Apartheid) in his country and was accused of conspiracy to overthrow the government. He served 27 years in prison.

The United Nations General Assembly designated July 18, coinciding with his birth, as Nelson Mandela International Day, celebrated every year since 2010, in recognition of the former South African president's contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.
