Havana, October 18 (RHC)-- The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (CC-PCC) and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel defended Monday the thesis that government management should be based on the science and innovation system to achieve sustainable development in the country.

Speaking on the opening day of the IV International Health Convention "Cuba Salud 2022", the dignitary recalled elements of his article published in the journal Anales, of the Cuban Academy of Sciences, in which he explained the need for a stronger interconnection in the universe of science, technology and innovation.

"Hence, new forms of management are required to transform this scenario and to strengthen the contributions to the economy, society and sovereignty," said the head of state at the Convention Palace in Havana.

He explained that this is vital for the search for creative solutions to problems arising in the process of economic and social development of the country, both in the production of goods and services, as well as in the areas of public administration, education and culture, among others.

The Cuban leader defined that among the main functions of the management system is that it allows the positioning of priorities, the application of knowledge in decision making; supporting the formulation, monitoring and evaluation of public policies; promoting interactions and eliminating barriers.

"The management system created allows for systematic dialogue between scientists and government, and this style of working can be extended to address other complex problems," he said.

"We want a great impact of knowledge in development, not only in the scientific field, but also in food sovereignty, local projects, among other sectors of the country," Díaz-Canel specified.

He emphasized that it is not only about innovating in technology, but also in structures, organization and management processes.

The Cuban president recalled the scenario in which the country lives, marked by the economic battle and the intensified economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States for more than 60 years.

He added that such policy deprived Cuba, during the most complex stage of the Covid-19 pandemic, of obtaining pulmonary ventilators and having the necessary amount of oxygen in health care centers.

"However, thanks to knowledge, science and innovation, it was possible to overcome those obstacles and we were even able to develop vaccine candidates and immunizers of national production that today allow us to show remarkable results in the confrontation and control of the SARS-CoV-2 virus," he pointed out.

"We have successfully overcome the pandemic," the Cuban president told delegates from more than 60 nations.

"We have learned that science and innovation have an answer for everything," concluded President Miguel Diaz-Canel.
