Cuban doctors in Maldives

Male, Feb 15 (RHC) Maldives Health Minister Dr. Ahmed Naseem thanked the work of Cuban doctors and expressed the intention to increase their number in the hospitals of that nation, a diplomatic source informed today.

Naseem held a meeting on February 13 with Cuban Ambassador Andres Gonzalez at the Ministry of Health headquarters in Male, to address issues related to the work of the Cuban medical brigade in the island nation.

The Cuban envoy thanked the support provided by the Health authorities to the doctors from the Caribbean country, who cover the specialties of surgery, anesthesia, radiology, hematology, psychiatry, and clinical and integral general medicine.

During the meeting, the diplomat highlighted the heroic struggle of the Cuban people to overcome the difficulties and limitations caused, fundamentally, by the harsh economic and financial blockade imposed by the U.S. government for more than 60 years, further intensified by 243 measures implemented by the Trump administration and still in force in the Biden administration.

He also expressed his gratitude to all the doctors and health specialists on behalf of the Government and the Cuban people for their beautiful work.

Dr. Daniel Posada, head of the Cuban medical brigade, ratified the commitment of all the members of the group to continue helping the people of Maldives to achieve the desired health standards.

The 13-member Cuban medical brigade arrived in the Maldives last June and provides services in six of the 26 atolls that make up the 1,200 inhabited Maldivian islands with a population of 579,330 inhabitants and to date has attended more than 17,300 patients, saved 65 lives and performed 66 surgeries, 625 ultrasounds, and 94 anesthesia procedures.
