International organization assesses positive evaluation in Cuban health areas

The Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery is one of the assessed hospitals

 

 

Havana, March 27 (RHC) The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) concluded with satisfactory results an assessment of Cuba regarding its support in human health areas.

The Country Level Assessment and Audit (CLEA) lasted five days and was conducted by experts from the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) who reviewed the period 2016-2022.

The study included the areas of human health, radiopharmaceutical production, cancer diagnosis and treatment, nuclear cardiology, radiotherapy, irradiation technologies, training in Medical Physics, radiation protection, and nuclear safety.

The tour of the experts covered the Technological Applications and Nuclear Development, Isotopes and Radiation Protection and Hygiene centers, as well as the Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery, and the Hermanos Ameijeiras Clinical Surgical Hospital.

Likewise, they were at the National Institutes of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology and the Higher Institute of Technologies and Applied Sciences, and at the Center for Medical-Surgical Research.

They held meetings with the National Directorate of Environmental Health, of the Ministry of Public Health, and the Nuclear Safety Directorate of the Office of Regulation and Environmental Safety, the country's nuclear regulatory authority.

They met by videoconference with specialists from the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Provincial Teaching Hospital, in the province of Holguín, to review projects related to radiotherapy in that eastern Cuban city.

In 2023, the CLEA chose Latin America and the Caribbean as the geographical area, including Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Jamaica and Peru.

In turn, the Office of Internal Oversight Services (OIOS) conducts objective, independent and systematic evaluations to help the IAEA carry out its mandate effectively and efficiently, as well as to ensure accountability and strong governance.  (Source: ACN)
