Cuba and UNESCO strengthen ties in higher education in Paris

 

Havana, Jul 27 (RHC) Cuba and UNESCO discussed their ties in the field of higher education, focused on promoting international cooperation and the quality of teaching.

Miriam Nicado, rector of the University of Havana, is in Paris with a busy schedule at the headquarters of the multilateral entity, where accompanied by the Cuban ambassador to UNESCO, Yahima Esquivel, she spoke among others with the Deputy Director General for Priority Africa and External Relations, Firmin Matoko.

Nicado also held meetings with specialists Paz Portales, from the Higher Education Section program, and Inga Nichanian, from the UNESCO Chairs and Unitwin Networks program (University Twinning and Interconnection Plan).

The rector of the Cuban university said that these were very fruitful meetings, with a view to expanding academic relations and joint work with actors from the African continent and Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe.

According to the also deputy and member of the island's Council of State, the talks dealt with the objective of improving the functionality of the UNESCO Chairs, for the sake of their contribution to regional educational development.

In this sense, she recalled that 12 of these chairs are in session in Cuba, half of them at the University of Havana (UH), an initiative that came to light in 1992 at the UNESCO General Assembly to promote research, training and the development programs of higher education through cooperation.

For her part, Ambassador Esquivel highlighted the presence of Nicado and the delegation that accompanies her and the agenda fulfilled as further proof of the close ties between Cuba and UNESCO and the shared commitment to the mandate of the multilateral entity. (Source: PL)
