Allende's dignity is highlighted in Cuba 50 years after the coup in Chile
Havana, Sep 11 (RHC) Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel today highlighted the courage and dignity of Salvador Allende for his resistance 50 years ago to defend Chilean democracy against the military coup of Augusto Pinochet.
“Neither 50 nor 100 years will be able to erase the horror of the military coup of 1973, nor the dignity of President Allende, who fulfilled the mandate of his people at the cost of his own life,” the president said on his X account.
The organizational secretary of the Cuban Communist Party, Roberto Morales, stated that 50 years ago fascist bombs led Chile to horror and death, but as he had promised, Allende gave his life in defense of the people.
Likewise, the Cuban foreign minister Bruno Rodríguez commemorated the heroic resistance of President Allende and his companions in defense of independence and democracy against the fascist attack against the Palacio de la Moneda, instigated and orchestrated by the United States.
50 years ago, on the morning of September 11, 1973, the Moneda building (headquarters of the Executive) was bombed and assaulted. President Allende, faced with the demand to surrender, responded through Radio Magallanes that he would not resign and would pay with his life.
Around one in the afternoon of that day and once all possibilities of resistance had been exhausted, Allende's death occurred after most of his escort and other combatants had fallen in the fight or were captured after running out of ammunition.
The post-coup military repression was terrible: tens of thousands of people were segregated in prisons or in soccer stadiums converted into concentration camps, thousands were tortured and murdered, and many others, adherents of left-wing parties or unions, had to flee, choosing the path of exile.
