Havana, March 4 (RHC) -- Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel, in his account on X, remembered the 101 victims and more than 400 people who were mutilated in the terrorist attack on La Coubre, on March 4, 1960.
From the pain and popular indignation sprouted the slogan in the voice of #Fidel: #PatriaOMuerte", today inseparable from a deep conviction: "We shall overcome!", wrote the Cuban leader on the platform.
On the same social network, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero assured that the explosion of the steamship La Coubre , was one of the many terrorist acts orchestrated to overthrow our Revolution.
"Two explosions shook the capital of our country, leaving a high toll of dead and wounded. Cuba does not forget."
For his part, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez pointed out on the same social network, that 64 years after the sabotage of the French steamship La Coubre our motto will always be Fatherland or Death!
"Sabotage to the French steamship La Coubre in the port of Havana 64 years ago reminds us that, in the face of hatred and terrorist actions that seek to destroy our Revolution and its humanist work, our motto will always be Fatherland or Death! We shall overcome!"
In the tragic attack, Fidel's voice was raised with the slogan "Fatherland or Death! We shall overcome!".
The ship arrived in the Cuban capital with weapons and ammunition acquired in Western Europe by the nascent Revolution for its defense against the increasing aggressions from the United States.
In its determination to liquidate the process of transformations initiated on January 1, 1959 on the island, the US government stimulated internal subversion through covert actions by the Central Intelligence Agency and threats of aggressions that materialized a year later.
The first explosion, which occurred while the ship was being unloaded, was followed by another which also hit the people who came to the aid of those affected.
The day after the events, on March 5, Commander in Chief Fidel Castro showed proof of the involvement of the US Government in the crime and pronounced for the first time the phrase "Homeland or Death".
