Around 44 percent of adults in the US live in a home with a gun, and approximately a third owns one personally

Havana, March 28 (RHC) The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez, today described the United States policy as double standards in terms of human rights, as the indiscriminate production, possession and trade of fire arms is common in that country.

On his X account, Rodríguez commented that the United States should not establish human rights standards where the right to life is worth less than the rights to produce, possess and indiscriminate trade in firearms.

According to an analysis recently published by CNN, the United States is the only nation in the world where there are more guns than civilians.

There are 120 firearms for every 100 Americans. In addition, around 44 percent of adults in that country live in a home with a gun, and approximately a third own one personally, according to surveys cited by the medium.

Gun violence is omnipresent in the United States and has left few places unscathed over the decades. Still, many Americans consider their right to carry them, stated in the Constitution, while critics of the Second Amendment say that right threatens the right of life.

In 2018, gun manufacturers produced nine million firearms in the northern nation, more than double the number manufactured in 2008. January 2021 marked the largest annual increase since 2013 in requests for federal background checks needed to purchase a gun, an increase of almost 60 percent since January 2020.

Likewise, in 2019, the number of deaths in the United States from gun violence was approximately four per one hundred thousand inhabitants, which represents 18 times the average rate of other developed countries.

Multiple studies show that easy access to firearms contributes to higher homicide rates.

Another phenomenon is self-harm, since in 2019 more than 23 thousand Americans died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.   (Source: PL)
