San Salvador, October 14 (RHC-PL) -- The General Secretary of the Farabundo Marti Front for National Liberation (FMLN), Medardo Gonzalez, on Monday described the blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba for more than 50 years as anachronistic.

"The economic, trade and financial blockade on the island and its people is something that should not exist,” the political leader told Prensa Latina.

Gonzalez stressed he is very fond of Fidel Castro, the leaders of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC), and the Cuban people, for their capacity to resist the blockade for so many decades. Also for being capable of creating beautiful things, making progresses in the human, scientific and economic development, and staying open to the world.

He said he welcomed the Resolution "Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Blockade Imposed by the United States of America against Cuba," to be voted on at the UN this month.

According to the document, the U.S. economic sanctions on Cuba have caused, at current rates during all those years, damages valued at $116.880 billion USD.
