Havana, December 5 (RHC) -- Cuban Doctor Félix Báez Sarría, who became infected with Ebola in Sierra Leone, has succesfully overcome the disease, according to Cuban health authorities.

An official statement of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health says that following two weeks of treatment at Geneva's University Hospital, medical authorities from the facility have confirmed the dissappearance of the virus in Dr. Baez' bodily fluids, adding that he would be soon discharged. When this happens, Dr. Felix Baez Sarria will return to Cuba, the official statement added.

The Public Health Ministry reiterates its appreciation to the World Health Organization, the governments of Sierra Leone, of Switzerland, and the medical staff involved in the treatment of Dr. Baez Sarría, as well as Cuban diplomats in Geneva.

The note also thanks the millions of people both inside and outside of Cuba, who expressed their solidarity and hopes for the recovery of the Cuban doctor.

Baez is a member of Cuba's medical brigade that is currently working in Sierra Leone to tackle the Ebola epidemic in that West African country.
