Havana, May 9 (RHC-PL) -- The National Ballet of Cuba (BNC) today dedicates a staging of the classic Don Quixote to the main musical event of the island, 'Cubadisco', and Russia, as Guest of Honor of the 2015 edition.

Although the literary work The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote was created in Spain more than four centuries ago, by the pen of Miguel de Cervantes, the first ballet version appeared in Russia in 1869, created by choreographer Marius Petipa and the premiere took place at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow.

The ballet is based on the chapter Camacho's Wedding, from the second part of the novel considered a masterpiece of Spanish literature.

The National Theater will host this piece starring lead dancers of the Cuban company Viengsay Valdes and Victor Estevez.

Valdes has been the only Cuban dancer invited to perform Don Quixote with the Mariinsky and Bolshoi Ballets, the two major Russian companies, and international critics consider her one of the best dancers in the history of that ballet.

With the show on Saturday, the National Ballet closes a cycle of homage to the 400th anniversary of the publication of the second volume of Don Quixote.

Yesterday's staging, starring BNC lead dancers Grettel Morejon and Alfredo Ibañez, showed the potential of both dancers, with performances worthy of greater opportunities.
