Guatemala City, December 24 (RHC)-- Guatemalan President Alejandro Maldonado has called on the United States to repeal U.S. legislation which seeks to destabilize Cuba, particularly the Cuban Adjustment Act and the so-called “wet-foot/dry-foot” policy.

The statements by the Guatemalan head of state have had big repercussions in the mainstream media, particularly his questioning of the legitimacy of those pieces of legislation, under which Cuban nationals, unlike immigrants from other countries, are admitted as soon as they set foot on U.S. soil, regardless of the irregular means they used to get there.

“No doubt, these measures encourage illegal immigration of Cubans into the United States,” said Maldonado, and reiterated his call on the U.S. government to either repeal the controversial, discriminatory piece of legislation or extend its benefits to immigrants from other nationalities as well.”

The Guatemalan newspaper Siglo 21, stressed that Maldonado's statements are in perfect tune with the views expressed by the government of Nicaragua, as well as with an editorial published Monday by The New York Times, which also called on the U.S. Congress to repeal the U.S. anti-Cuba legislation.
