Havana, January 13 (RHC)-- The first fourth months of 2016 could bring heavy rains and thunderstorms associated with several frontal systems, all related to El Niño South Oscillation phenomena.

Doctor Ramon Perez, an expert with the Cuban Meteorology Institute and researcher of the El Niño natural phenomena, said that the complex process of oceanic-atmospheric interaction made 2015 the warmest year in Cuba since 1951, while the November-December period brought more rain than usual, particularly in western and central Cuba.

According to the expert, the El Niño phenomenon is expected to continue through the month of February, later gradually decline its effects. But once it has strengthened, it led to temporary changes in atmospheric circulation, which can generate regional climatic variations that will affect Cuba.
