Havana, February 2 (RHC-PL)-- World Wetlands Day is being celebrated today in Cuba with a group of activities dedicated to raising awareness about the value of these ecosystems for humanity.
Among activities, there is an exhibition entitled 'Ciénaga de Zapata, the Largest and Best Preserved Wetland of the Caribbean Island,' which opened Thursday afternoon at the National Museum of Natural History, in Old Havana.
Actions have been organized also in provinces across the country, including workshops, scientific exchange, community participation festivals and cultural events, among others.
To mark the occasion, a festival dedicated to the conservation of mangroves will be held next Saturday in Surgidero de Batabanó, in the western province of Mayabeque.
Organized by the Plant! Initiative of the Cuban Society of Botany (SCB) and the Live Environment Mangrove Project of the Environmental Agency (AMA), the festival is supported by the Global Environment Facility through the United Nations Development Program.
February 2 is World Wetlands Day, commemorating the signing of the Convention on Wetlands in Ramsar, Iran, on the same date of 1971.
