Havana, June 30 (RHC)--Biblioteca Nacional de Cuba José Martí, or in English the National Library of Cuba, has been declared a National Monument, by the National Council on Cultural Heritage.
The distinction was presented at a solemn ceremony Wednesday at the library in the framework of activities marking the 60th anniversary of Fidel’s iconic speech ‘Palabras a los Intelectuales’ ‘Words to Intellectuals’.
the National Library of Cuba first opened its doors on October 18th, 1901. It was not until 1949 that it was named after National Hero José Martí.
The repository of the documentary heritage for Cuba, it is the guiding methodological center for the whole network of public libraries in the country, a total of three hundred and eighty-eight libraries, as compared to less than 30 before 1959.
The entity treasures over 3 million volumes, most of them digitalized, including 26,000 maps, over 200,000 photographs.
The Biblioteca Nacional de Cuba José Martí contributes materials from its collections to the Digital Library of the Caribbean and through a unique partnership with University of Florida, 133,000 Cuban titles have been registered in WorldCat, and constitute valuable additions to the worldwide library community.
