Viengsay Valdés

Havana, September 7 (RHC)-- Cuban ballerina Viengsay Valdés, director of the iconic ballet company Ballet Nacional de Cuba, founded by prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso, was awarded the Leonide Massine Dance Positano Prize for Best Ballet Dancer on the World Stage.

In announcing their decision, the jury of one of the world’s oldest, most prestigious dance prizes described Viengsay as the true follower of the vast legacy of Alicia Alonso, considered a legend of Cuban and universal dance.

The jury, chaired by Alfio Agostini, director of the international magazine BALLET2000, said that Valdés is a dancer of high academic level, of virtuoso technique and strong stage presence, who has masterfully performed all leading roles of the Cuban and world classical ballet repertoire.

The ‘Léonide Massine’ Positano Dance Prize is one of the top recognitions in the dance world, established on the coast of the Italian city of Positano as a destination that lured many 20th century ballet celebrities.
