The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), shortly after announcing the results, annulled the draw for the round of 16 of the Champions League.
Nyon, December 13 (RHC)-- The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), shortly after announcing the results, annulled the draw for the round of 16 of the Champions League.
According to a statement from the organization, the decision was due to a "material error in the draw", caused by a "technical problem with the software of an external service provider that instructs officials which teams can play each other".
At the same time, UEFA announced that the draw will be "repeated in full" today at 15:00 Central European Time (14:00 GMT).
The glitch caused inconsistencies when "giving instructions" to officials on the teams that may face each other. According to Sky Sports, this mainly affected the choice of potential opponents for Atletico Madrid, one of the 16 teams that qualified for this stage of the tournament, as Manchester United was not included in the group.
UEFA regulations state that teams that played against each other in the group stage will not be able to play each other in the round of 16. In this order of ideas, both teams had to share the same bowl in the draw. On the other hand, Liverpool, which did face the club coached by Diego Simeone, appeared as a possible opponent. n(Source/RT)
