Spain beat Australia 3-0 and Brazil 5-0 against Costa Rica to advance to the round of 16 of the 10th U20 Women's World Cup Costa Rica 2022.
Havana, August 17 (RHC)-- Spain beat Australia 3-0 and Brazil 5-0 against Costa Rica to advance to the round of 16 of the 10th U20 Women's World Cup Costa Rica 2022.
The Spaniards dominated the entire game, and are first in Group A by better goal difference for and against. The match was held at the Alejandro Morera Solo stadium in Alajuela, capital of the province of the same name.
On the other hand, the Costa Ricans were outplayed in all aspects of the game by the Brazilians in front of another good attendance of fans -just over 11,000-, although not as in the two previous challenges when there were more than 22,000 each day.
Earlier, Colombia and Mexico advanced to the round of 16, and caused a surprise by knocking out Germany, one of the favorites to lift the cup in this tenth edition.
Colombia, on the first day of the group stage, in group B, caused the first surprise of the Costa Rican event by beating Germany 1-0, which, after a 3-0 victory over New Zealand, fell 1-0 to Mexico, thus leaving the European team in the way to the title discussion.
This is the first time that Germany, three-time world champion in this category, has dropped out of the Cup in the knockout stage; and also the first time it has lost, not once, but twice, both times to Latin American teams.
Colombia and Mexico finished level on five points, thanks to one win and two draws apiece. However, on the basis of better goal difference for and against, the South Americans topped Group B.
New Zealand was the other team eliminated, and fought until the last minute against Colombia for victory, but a 2-2 draw denied them a ticket to the Round of 16.
Today, Group C, which features Nigeria, already qualified to the next round, will define the other team in the round of 16, and Group D the two teams that will continue in the title race.
The X U20 Women's World Cup Costa Rica 2022 kicked off on the 10th and will conclude on the 28th.
Costa Rica alone assumed the organization of this event, which should have been held in 2020 jointly with Panama, but was first suspended by the COVID-19 pandemic and then again postponed by the resignation of the neighboring country to be co-organizer.
