Cuba approves women's boxing

Havana, December 5 (RHC) - Cuba on Monday approved women's boxing and expects a women's team from the island to make its official debut in the international context at the Central Caribbean Games in San Salvador-2023.

"It is about placing Cuban women in the spaces they require. We have been working for many years on it (the approval of women's boxing)," said Inder vice president Ariel Saínz at a press conference.

He explained that the decision was made after an analysis with other institutions in the country, including the Federation of Cuban Women, which endorsed the proposal.

Saínz was at the press conference accompanied by Alberto Puig, head of the Cuban Boxing Federation, and Rebeca Hernández, coordinator of the National Program for the Advancement of Women.

It is expected that next December 16 and 17 a national competition will be held, with 48 female boxers, of which 12 athletes will be members of the first national pre-selection.

From these 12 will come the 6 who will fight in the San Salvador Games, according to Puig.

He said it is possible that in the next world championship, scheduled for May 2023 in Uzbekistan, it is possible that Cuba will participate with some boxers.
