Havana, March 16 (JIT) - Cuban Elisbet Gámez said goodbye to the Malaysia Swimming Open 2023 with another national record, setting an exact 26 seconds in the 50-meter freestyle, a performance that earned her the silver medal.

The previous record of 26:39 had been achieved during the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games, in Canada, exactly on July 17. 

In previous days, Elisbet achieved gold medals in the 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters, including the Cuban primacy of 55.40 in the hectometer. He thus surpassed his own mark of 55.51 that dated back to the Barranquilla 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games.   

Nelson García, national swimming commissioner, pondered the performance of the 25-year-old ondina, "who again demonstrated her grit in every competition and shows progress in a year with very important commitments."

The 50-meter freestyle is the only one in that distance in the program of the Central American and Caribbean Games of San Salvador 2023, but it is not among Elisbet's goals.

"However, it is very positive that he competes and has that performance because it serves him to improve his speed, his pace and better conceive his tactics for his two fundamental events: the 200 and 400 freestyle," he told JIT.

The executive confirmed Elisbet's arrival next Sunday and that a week later he will travel with 11 teammates of the national team to the Dominican Republic to participate in the Santo Domingo open in search of more tickets for the regional event in San Salvador 2023.
