Twelve Cubans to go for medals in World Boxing Championship

Havana, May 9 (RHC) - Cuba placed 12 fighters out of a possible 13 in the quarterfinals of the World Boxing Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, after winning five fights and losing only one.

The champion of the previous edition, Yoenlis Hernandez (75kg) closed the excellent day for the so-called "Flagship" of Cuban sport, by disposing 5-0 of Mongolian Otgonjargal Jargal, in a fight he dominated from start to finish.

Two-time Olympic champions Roniel Iglesias (67), by RSC in the third round against Ecuador's Jhancarlo Mina, and Arlen Lopez (80) against Hungary's Pal Kovacs (5-0), world champion Yosvany Veitía (54) against Turkey's Muzzaffer (5-0), as well as debutant Jorge Cuellar (71) with a great third round against Ecuador's José Rodríguez, in a fight that was voted 5-2.

The only defeat of the Cubans was the young Erislan Romero (51 kg) against the Olympic champion of Rio-2016, the Uzbek Dusmatov (5-0).

Cuba, which in the last world championship won 5 medals (3-0-2), will have 12 men in Wednesday's quarterfinals and the winners will secure bronze medals.
