Havana, June 12 (ACN) --The Cuban men's volleyball team defeated Guatemala 3-2 in group B of the Continental Championship of North, Central America and the Caribbean (Norceca) under 21, held until Sunday in Nogales, Mexico , qualifying tournament for the 2025 category world championship.
According to the site www.norceca.net, the disciples of technical director (DT) Lian Sem Estrada lost the first set, 22-25, reacted in the second and third, 25-20 and 25-20, fell in the fourth, 22 -15, and they achieved success in the fifth, 15-13, after two hours of action on the court, with Daniel Guillermo Martínez standing out.
The Cuban Martínez was the top scorer of the match with 27 points, 22 on the attack, four on the block and one on the serve, supported by his teammates Kelly Brian Oviedo (14/14-0-0) and Carlos Javier Larrea (13/11/2/0), but his team surrendered 36 points due to their own errors compared to 31 from their rivals.
For Guatemala, Luis Roberto Mendizábal (23/18-5-0), Roberto Carlos Racinos (15/14-0-1) and José Luis Samayoa (12/8-2-2) stood out individually, the other three players with doubles digits in the challenge.
The official collective statistics of the match reflected better results for Cuba in attack (65-51), while the Guatemalans did so in blocking (11-10) and serving (5-3).
This Wednesday Estrada's pupils will face Puerto Rico and on Thursday Canada, at the close of the group preliminary phase.
On Friday there will be the quarterfinals, on Saturday the semifinals, where the first places in the two sections will advance, and on Sunday the medals will be discussed.
