Italy donates funds in support of Cuba's baseball team for the Blind

Baseball for the blind

Rome, Sept 25 (PL) - The National Association of Italy-Cuba Friendship (Anaic) made a donation in support of the Blind Baseball team of the Antillean nation that will participate in the II World Cup of that sport, said a spokesman.

Marco Papacci, president of Anaic, told Prensa Latina that his organization is proud to have contributed with a financial contribution for the purchase of plane tickets for the participation of the Cuban team in that event, which will take place in the United Kingdom from the 27th to the 29th of this month.

The call for this fundraising to facilitate the presence of the Cuban team in the second edition of the World Cup was made by the Italian Association of Baseball for the Blind (Aibxc), whose president, Alberto Mazzanti, thanked Anaic for its contribution.

The Aibxc contributed the amount of 12,000 Euros, while Anaic gave 3,650 Euros and other donors sent through bank transfers the amount of 1,650 Euros, according to the note sent by Mazzanti.

The next world event of that sport will be held in the London town of Buckinghamshire, and teams from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States, Cuba, China, Hungary, Pakistan, Tanzania and Italy, the country that won the Cup in the first edition, held in 2022 in the Dutch town of Beek, will participate.

The upcoming tournament is sponsored by the World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC) and the Cuban team was placed in Group B along with the teams of China, Hungary, the Netherlands and the reigning champion, Italy, while in Group A will compete the United States, Pakistan, Tanzania and the British hosts.

According to the rules of the competition, the second ranked team of each group will face the first place of the other, the winners will compete for the gold medal, while the losers will compete for the bronze.

Cuba, although debuting in this World Cup, has been practicing this sport for several years and its national team has already won medals in international tournaments, the gold medal in an event disputed in France in 2017.
