Havana, Dec 16 (RHC) - When talking about wrestling competitions Russia stands out for being the most powerful country in this style, which allows the gladiator to grab any part of his opponent's body.

Therefore, a round of applause is in order for coach Julio Mendieta, who performed this weekend with three of his students in an international competition on Russian mats, and will return home with a silver and a bronze medal.

The tournament was attended by wrestlers from 21 countries, mainly from Europe and Asia.

Arturo Silot (97 kg), Pan American silver medalist, disputed four bouts and lost in the final against local Kilab Musaev.

Geannis Garzón (74 kg) won the bronze medal with a 6-0 victory against Frazier B., from Turkmenistan.

The third Cuban gladiator to step on the mat was Yosenki Castañeda (92 kg), who lost in his first fight.

Wrestling received the award for the best sport of the year in Cuba, mainly for winning five of the delegation's nine medals at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

These were divided into three in Greco-Roman style (1-0-2) and two in women's freestyle (0-1-1). But the men's freestyle could not bring awards.

Undoubtedly, these three young gladiators could become serious exponents for recovering the freestyle level in future competitions.
