Sports at the Center of AFIDE Convention in Cuba

Sports will be the focus of attention and exchange of experiences during the 6th International Convention on Physical Activity and Sports (Afide-2015), to be held at the Havana Conference Center from November 23rd to the 27th.

At a press conference held at the Manuel Fajardo University of Sciences of Physical Education and Sports, Vice Rector of Research, Luis del Toro, said at least 753 delegates, including 435 foreigners from 50 nations, "the highest number in the history of Afide, will attend, which shows the importance of the event."

Del Toro said the meeting will also promote the results of scientific research in the field, allowing delegates to know and share best practices of what the different countries are doing not only for high-yield athletes, but for improving the peoples' health through sports and physical activity.

He said the masterly lectures will start on Tuesday, November 24th, including that of Antonio Becali, the president of the Cuban Sports Institute (Inder).

Del Toro also announced that the Second International Symposium on Baseball will be held in parallel to the Convention.

Beach Volleyball Norceca Circuit

Cuba will be represented by three pairs of athletes in the seventh and final stage of the North American Volleyball Federation (Norceca) 10th Beach Volleyball Circuit.

Nivaldo Diaz and Sergio Gonzalez make up the Cuban pairing that will compete in the men's tournament while duets Leila Martinez/Lianma Flores and Lidianni Echevarria/Yanisleidis Sanchez, will compete in the women's section, according to JIT newspaper.

The games will take place from Friday until Sunday in Trinidad and Tobago. The tournament will give qualifying points for the Olympic Games 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In the current season, the Diaz/Gonzalez pairing have had the best results for Cuba as they won the first and fourth stages of the competition in the Cayman Islands and the Cuban beach resort Varadero respectively.

Martinez/Flores obtained the silver medal in Varadero while Echevarria/Sanchez also came in second place in the third stage of the competition in Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic.

The 10th Circuit began in April in Grand Cayman (Cayman Islands) and then moved on to Punta Cana, North Bay (Canada), Varadero, Tavares (Florida, the United States) and Santa Lucia.


 

Badminton International Tournament in Paramaribo

Cuban Osleni Guerrero qualified to quarterfinals on Thursday after winning over Hungarian Gergely Krausz 21-11 and 21-15 in 34 minutes in the 9th Badminton International Tournament in Paramaribo, Suriname. Winners in each modality earn 2500 points.

Guerrero achieved his second win in the tournament. He had beaten Mexican Arturo Hernández 21-9 and 21-15 in 31 minutes on Wednesday.

U.S. beats Mexico 6-1 to reach Premier12 final vs South Korea

The United States scored five runs in the fourth inning to beat Mexico 6-1 and reach the Premier12 baseball final on Friday.

The U.S., takes on South Korea in the final on Saturday. The Koreans beat Japan 4-3 on Thursday.

"I was very impressed with the Korean team," U.S. manager Willie Randolph said. "They came back against Japan and are a very good team, but right now we feel like we are the team to beat."

Mexico took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a solo homer by Humberto Sosa, but the U.S. quickly rallied at Tokyo Dome Stadium.

After Adam Frazier's two-out RBI single, Dan Rohlfing hit a two-run double to make it 3-1.

Elliot Soto followed with a single to right, driving in Rohlfing and advancing to third on an error.

Jacob May capped the five-run outburst with a line drive that scored Soto.

Right-hander Zeke Spruill on short notice gave up one run on five hits over five innings for the win.

The U.S. team announced pitcher Zack Segovia to start the final game and South Korea will rely on Kim Kwang-hyun.
