Gaza City, August 22 (RHC)-- Palestinian sources in the Gaza Strip report that up to 50 Israeli airstrikes took place in the territory on Sunday night.  The strikes were carried out after a rocket was fired earlier in the day from the embattled strip, landing on the border settlement of Sderot in an open area and injuring no one.

The Israeli assault, carried out through air and artillery strikes, demolished several civilian sites in the Gaza Strip and injured two, including a 17-year-boy, according to a Palestinian Health Ministry official.

Gazans on social media noted that airstrikes were taking place all over the strip. The Israeli military earlier confirmed it had struck two camps for the Hamas movement, which controls the strip.

Observers said the intensity of Sunday’s attacks are part of the strategy of new Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who was appointed in May.

The Israeli military frequently bombs Gaza.  Disproportionate force is always used in violation of international law and civilians are often killed or injured.

In early July 2014, Tel Aviv waged a war on the Gaza Strip.  The 50-day military aggression, which ended on August 26, killed nearly 2,200 Palestinians, including over 570 children. Over 11,100 others were also wounded in the war. Israel continues to carry out attacks on the Palestinian enclave from time to time.

Gaza has been blockaded since 2007 and Israel denies about 1.8 million people in the besieged territory their basic rights, such as freedom of movement, proper job, and adequate healthcare and education.
