Washington, September 22 (RHC)-- There are an estimated 265 million guns in the U.S., roughly one for every adult in the country. A joint survey from Harvard and Northeastern University found out that only 3 percent of U.S. citizens own nearly half of the 265 million guns in the country.
This group, of 7.7 million people, owns between eight and 140 guns each, The Guardian newspaper reported Tuesday, citing a copy of the yet-unpublished report. The total population of the U.S. is roughly 315 million people, of which roughly 265 million are adults.
The survey also found that 25 percent of U.S. citizens identifying as either white or multiracial said they owned a gun, compared with just 16 percent of Latinos and 14 percent of Black people.
In fact, the number of people who own guns has actually decreased from 25 percent to 22 percent, according to official figures.
Some states have recently passed firearm restriction laws, including California which decided to expand background checks and implement a ban on high-capacity magazines. Attempts to enact stricter gun control legislation across the country follows an increase in the number of of mass shootings, like the one in Oregon last year and more recently in Orlando.
More than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the United States. Earlier this year, President Barack Obama vowed to bypass the Republican-dominated Congress and its opposition to gun control through executive action, but the reforms have not materialized.
