Havana, November 22 (RHC-Telesur)--At least 365 immigrants drowned in the Mediterranean, from November 15 through the 17th, making the month the most lethal of 2016, with six times the number of deaths as during the same period in 2015, according to the International Organization for Migration (OIM).

"This is really a calamity in plain sight," affirmed OIM spokesperson Leonard Doyle, during a press conference in Geneva, while emphasizing the tragic scenes of rubber boats sinking in the Mediterranean in the middle of winter.

The most recent incidents involving primarily West African migrants who depart from Libya headed toward Italy, have led to a higher number of deaths at sea, which have reached 4,636 thus far this year, Doyle reported.

During 2016, some 343,589 immigrants have reached Europe, as compared to 728,926 during the same period in 2015, according to OIM figures, cited by Reuters.
