Havana, Apr 10 (RHC), -- The United Nations Organization for Food and Agriculture (FAO) will honor the figure of late Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez, by naming a new hunger eradication program after the visionary leader.

The announcement was made by Raul Benitez, FAO director for Latin America and the Caribbean, who said this was the best way to honor Chavez, whose succesful efforts to eradicate hunger in Venezuela put that South American nation 10 years ahead of the rest of the world in this regard.

Benitez also explained some details regarding the implementation of the UN organization's anti-hunger program in the region, where it hopes to eradicate hunger before 2025.

He said that never before has the planet produced more food, but 840 million of people are still starving in the world.

He emphasized that in Latin America and the Caribbean, 47 million inhabitants face starvation, and the problem is not food production but the access to it.

Benitez highlighted the commitment of multinational organizations involved in the eradication of hunger such as the Union of South American Nations, The South Common Market, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, Petrocaribe and Caricom.
