Rome, May 1 (RHC)-- Italy's national Workers' Day demonstration was held today in Potenza, capital of the southern region of Basilicata, while events called by trade unions were held across the country, a spokesman said.

A spokesman for the organizers said, in statements reported by the digital site of the Sky television channel TG24, that in Potenza the main leaders of the Italian General Confederation of Labor (CGIL), the Confederation of Italian Workers' Trade Unions (CISL) and the Italian Labor Union (UIL) gathered.

Pierpaolo Bombardieri, Luigi Sbarra and Maurizio Landini, general secretaries of UIL, CISL and CGIL, respectively, spoke at the meeting, which, according to the source, coincided in demanding answers to the main labor problems, such as precariousness, low wages and too high taxes.

This Workers' Day is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Constitution, in which "work is recognized as the first fundamental principle of the Italian Republic, a personal right and social duty that must be guaranteed and valued," underlines a joint communiqué from these unions.

In view of the lack of receptivity to the demands, "it is time to launch a new mobilization that we will continue in the coming weeks," said Landini at the event, held at 10:00 local time in the Mario Pagano square in that city.

For his part, Sbarra pointed out that "talking about the Constitution means highlighting and retaking Article 1, which underlines that Italy is a democratic republic founded on labor, but there is a lot to be done in this regard".

At a march called by the CGIL in the community of Portella della Ginestra, in the southern Sicilian province of Palermo, the president of the Democratic Party (PD), Elly Schlein, expressed that "work in Italy is too poor" and added that "a minimum wage must be introduced".

In major cities such as Milan, Turin, Bologna and Rome, various events are taking place, including a nine-hour musical event scheduled for midday in Piazza San Giovanni in the Italian capital.

On the other hand, due to bad weather conditions, rallies called in Taranto, Bari, Lecce and Andria, located in the southern region of Apulia, were cancelled or postponed.
