Puebla Group holds IX Meeting in Mexico

Mexico City, September 29 (RHC)-- The Puebla Group is beginning its IX Meeting in the Mexican city that saw the birth of the integrating instance, with the presence of several former presidents and whose purpose will be the presentation of its "progressive foreign policy."

The forum announced in a statement that in this meeting, which will conclude on Sunday, October 1st, will install its progressive international agenda to combat hunger, economic blockades, the climate crisis and de-globalization.

Former presidents Ernesto Samper (Colombia), Evo Morales (Bolivia), Rafael Correa (Ecuador), Manuel Zelaya (Honduras), Leonel Fernández (Dominican Republic) and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (Spain) have already confirmed their participation.  Although the "great leaders of the Puebla Group, who could not attend, such as the presidents (of Brazil) Luiz Inácio Lula, (of Argentina) Alberto Fernández and the former presidents (of Uruguay) Pepe Mujica, and (of Brazil) Dilma Rousseff support this event and will give their virtual greetings at the inaugural conference".

As special guests will be the Vice President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, the Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena, the National Coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the Fourth Transformation in Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, and the Secretary for Climate Change of Argentina, Cecilia Nicolini, among others.

Among the topics to be discussed at the meeting will be: the creation of a common currency, a new multilateralism, the convergence of their sub-regional integration organizations, the new solidarity model of development, the energy transition and the insertion of the continent in the global South through spaces such as the BRICS, among others.  Also, a proposal for a cease-fire between Ukraine and Russia, while a path to peace is being discussed.

The meeting will include the presentation of two books written by jurists of the Latin American Council for Justice and Democracy (Clajud) entitled: OAS in times of Almagro, which details his anti-democratic actions in the crises of the region, and Legal wars against democracy: lawfare in Latin America.

The venue for the IX Puebla Group meeting will be the International Museum of the Baroque, which will receive more than 200 people, including members of the forum and special guests.

Speaking about the meeting, Samper expressed that "as progressivism is advancing we must also advance in our agendas and identify the international positions of the Puebla Group, taking into account that there are right-wing forces that want to disembark in Latin America and we must fight them, without ideological hatred, with progressive positions".

Marco Enríquez-Ominami, coordinator of the Puebla Group, said that this forum is important because "Latin America and the Caribbean have regained their voice through progressive governments and together we can propose a change to the region."
