Ecuador: President Inspects Damage Caused by Opposition Protest

Quito, September 20 (PL-RHC), -- The president of Ecuador, Rafael Correa, on Friday inspected the damage caused by violent protesters in San Francisco Square, which is part of the historic center of the city declared a World Cultural Heritage.

The President toured the square accompanied by Interior Minister Jose Serrano in order to assess the damage caused by the people who carried out violent incidents during an opposition protest on Wednesday, according to the President's Twitter account.

Local newspaper El Telegrafo reported that the head of state described the event as an act of vandalism and said they will not be unpunished, and authorities are investigating to determine those responsible.

During the protest, 17 soldiers were wounded by protesters who attacked them with rocks, pipe bombs and burning logs.

Authorities arrested 120 individuals, 54 of them were minors who were released to their parents, Serrano told Gama TV channel on Thursday.
