Rafah, May 27 (RHC)-- Israeli forces have bombed a tent camp housing displaced people in a designed safe zone in Rafah, killing at least 40 Palestinians, according to officials.  Many of the victims were women and children.

The attack on the Tal as-Sultan area came as Israeli forces also bombed shelters housing displaced Palestinians in areas including Jabalia, Nuseirat and Gaza City in the past 24 hours, killing at least 160 others, according to the Palestinian officials.

The Israeli military confirmed the attack, saying it targeted Hamas fighters using what they calledd “precision weaponry.”  Later, Tel Aviv admitted civilians were injured when a fire broke out and said the incident is "under investigation."

Rescue workers told reporters that there were many "charred and burned" bodies pulled from the site of Rafah attack.  They said it took approximately 45 minutes to suppress the fire in the area, and many of the injured lost limbs and suffered other injuries due to the use of potentially internationally prohibited weapons that caused a massive fire.
