St. George's, July 7 (RHC)-- The Government of the island of Grenada declared this Saturday the district of Saint Patricks and the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique as disaster areas due to the devastation caused by the powerful hurricane Beryl.

The emergency declaration was imposed between July 1st and September 30th.

On July 1st, at 11:10 a.m. on Monday, the eye of Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Carriacou Island, in Grenada, with winds of 241 km/h, category 4 in Saffir-Simpson scale, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).

At the moment, three people have been killed in Grenada by the direct impact of Hurricane Beryl, which hit the Caribbean island with sustained winds of 193 kilometers per hour that razed and destroyed 98% of homes in Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

In Saint Patrick, meanwhile, countless roofs of residences flew, while the agricultural area was devastated. The electrical, drinking water and telecommunications system was also destroyed.

According to section 55 of the Disaster Management Act, imposed in October 2023, the Prime Minister can declare Grenada a disaster zone if he understands that the island suffered substantial danger from a catastrophe that happened or has the potential to occur.

It also calls on anyone authorized under this law to activate disaster management and disaster-risk powers that could prevent or minimize human loss, illness or injury to any citizen, loss of property or damage to the environment.
