Pedro Castillo registered his candidacy for the presidency of Peru

Havana, July 17 (RHC) Former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo presented the documents to formalize his political movement 'All with the People' before the National Electoral Board (JNE), as a preliminary step to running again for the presidency of his country for 2026.

His lawyer, William Paco Castillo, announced in La Paz that "he, who is suffering in detention, has told me that he is going to head the list to preside this republic for the second time".

He also clarified that this is not an immediate re-election -prohibited in Peru- since the current head of state is Dina Boluarte and therefore, he can be a candidate as he was in 2021.

The former president of Peru (2021-2022) was imprisoned for 18 months -extended by 14 months- for alleged rebellion after his attempt to dissolve the Congress of the Republic and for another 36 months for allegedly being the leader of a criminal organization.

His lawyer, however, discredited the charges. "At no time did he dissolve the institutions, they continued to function. The political issue, the coup issue, here the rebellion issue, the crime has typical elements, it is not enough for me to say that I am going to dissolve, this crime has to be completed, and it is completed when the institutions are closed," he commented.
