Hanoi, September 8 (RHC)-- A total of 14 people died and another 176 were injured after Super Typhoon Yagi passed through mountainous towns in northern Vietnam this weekend, according to the most recent report from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Of the total fatalities, four were from Quang Ninh province, three from Hanoi, one from Hai Phong, one from Military Region 3 and four from the same family in Hoa Binh. These were the worst-affected localities, with major power outages included.

The Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue of Hanoi City announced the closure of four airports in the north of the country, as well as the evacuation of citizens living in the most dangerous areas.

According to the body, material losses include damage to 3,279 houses, the collapse of 401 electric poles, as well as 121,500 hectares of rice crops and other agricultural products (16 hectares of vegetables and 2.2 hectares of fruit trees).

After the typhoon weakened to a tropical depression, local authorities and residents have been making concerted efforts to recover since the early hours of Sunday. Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính highlighted the wide-ranging impact on 26 localities from the northern region to Thanh Hoa province.

The National Hydrometeorological Forecasting Center forecasts heavy rains today and tomorrow in all plains, midlands and mountainous areas in the north, with an average 24-hour rainfall of up to 100-150 millimeters.  Therefore, there is a high risk of flooding in rivers and streams, as well as landslides in some localities.
